Obamacare vs. The Affordable Care Act- Things that seem the same, but poll differently

Obamacare, most Americans hear that word and shudder. Recent surveys have discovered that 55% of Americans are against Obamacare, however, when surveyed about the Affordable Care Act the polls showed 70% of Americans approved.

So the country has clearly shown that we should choose the Affordable Care Act, the only problem is Obamacare and the Affordable Care Act are the same thing. Mostly due to the station known as Fox News, people believe the craziest things about Obamacare. They have claimed so many terrible things about it that people just outright hate it even though they have no idea what it is or what it actually does.

When it is broken down, the main important points are actually good for the country as a whole and when asked about the specifics, most people are actually happy with them. The basic benefits are that insurance companies can no longer refuse service to people with pre-existing conditions, the government will help pay for health insurance if you cannot afford it, and young adults can stay on their parents health insurance plans until they turn 26. If people are so happy with the individual points and the Affordable Care Act, then why are they so against Obamacare? Look no further than the conservatives on Fox News. In a recent interview Bill O’Reilly stated that a majority of people do not support Obamacare. However, a little digging by politifact found that, “the most recent poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation and Harvard School Of Public Health…found that 50 percent of respondents had an unfavorable view of the law, while 41 percent viewed it favorably…another 9 percent said they didn’t know or didn’t want to answer.” Looking at the individual pieces of the legislature, however, reveals that, “tax credits to help low- and moderate-income people buy insurance (79 percent favorable) and expanding Medicaid, the government-run health care program for the poor (67 percent favorable).” More information about this can be found at http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2011/feb/08/bill-oreilly/majority-people-polls-do-not-support-obamacare/.

While one could fill many novels with the crazy things Fox News has spouted about this legislature such as requiring jail time if people do not buy health insurance (http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2010/apr/27/bill-oreilly/oreilly-says-no-one-fox-raised-issue-jail-time-not/). The worst thing is that the American people remain uninformed and now simply do not know who to believe. The best way to show just how uninformed people are would be to walk around the street and interview random people. That is exactly what Jimmy Kimmel live chose to do, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sx2scvIFGjE.
