While they may be new to the Ithaca music scene, Ithaca College’s The Yips are far from new to music. Formed this past semester, this group of four students composed of Sophomores Will Gelder, Jack Simons, and Sam Bandes, and Junior Michael ‘Izzy’ Isabella, is anything but ordinary. All hailing from New York, this band plays a variety of music and styles, ranging from indie rock, to funk, to reggae, and alternative, and they play a combination of covers and original songs.
Although they are a relatively new band, they rehearse multiple times a week in order to prepare for the many shows they play at venues scattered around Ithaca, such as Castaways and The Nines. Recently, they played at the IC Battle of the Bands, held in Emmerson Suites. The winning band, Second Dam, will get to play as an opening act at the IC Kicks Back event featuring The Wailers, which is a huge honor. Despite not winning the Battle of the Bands, The Yips have still been as busy as ever. Their last event of the semester was the Israel Independence Day presented by the Ithaca College Hillel group, which featured both The Yips and Gypsy Gets Shotgun and celebrated the independence of Israel.
Although they’re done performing in Ithaca for the rest of the semester, the band has plans to record some of its signature songs this summer, in the recording studio located in bassist Jack Simon’s house. Currently The Yips are unsigned, but they hope that by recording some of their songs and posting them to their Facebook via Bandcamp, to attract labels and representation. While they don’t know exactly when they will be able to get together as a band to record this summer, they encourage all their friends, family, and fans to keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates.
