Liverpool FC to play AS Roma in a European Re-Match at Fenway
As part of their pre-season tour, Liverpool Football Club have announced a stop at Fenway Park on July 25th to play AS Roma whom they beat in the 1984 European Cup Final.
Liverpool FC are now set to face the Italian giants once more this summer as a highlight of Fenway Park’s historic 100th year.
In January, rumors began to leak of a pre-season across the pond, and it was a stop in Boston that was revealed first on their website as part of a thus far three match tour.
Not only does the game coincide with the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park, but the opponent itself also adds to the promise of a special evening.
At the end of each season of soccer (football) in Europe, the clubs with the best records in the leagues that are deemed by UEFA (the Union of European Football Associations) to be of the highest quality qualify for an international club competition. Perhaps the most prestigious tournament in the world, it was originally called the European Cup, but has been known since 1993 as the UEFA Champions League.
Through this competition, Liverpool FC have five times been crowned champions of Europe. The Final in 1984 was set to be in Rome. Having qualified as champions of their Serie A league in Italy, AS Roma made it to the final in their home stadium only to lose to Liverpool in a penalty kick shoot out.
Having last travelled to the States in 2004, Liverpool FC are looking to make this a memorable trip for fans who can’t afford to travel and give others a glimpse of the talent that has made them the most decorated club in English soccer.
Tickets and more information are being made available online, with other matches against fellow league powerhouse Tottenham Hotspur in Baltimore, and a visit to Canada to play Toronto FC.
